How Law Firms Can Appear More in AI Search Results

Share

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer “the future” — it’s here, and it has put its foot down. A giant, heavy foot in the world of search, generative answers, and online curiosity.

As a full-service digital marketing company for law firms, it’s our job to stay ahead of these changes. That means studying AI behavior, asking the right questions, analyzing results, and constantly testing how modern AI tools interpret, cite, and surface legal content online.

So we decided to take those questions directly to the machine.

We asked ChatGPT:

“How can a law firm appear more often in AI results — both in the answers themselves and in the list of cited sources?”

Its opening reply says everything:

“Excellent question — and you’re thinking in the right direction by separating SEO ranking factors (Google) from AI sourcing factors (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, etc.).”

So let’s dive into how AI models choose which sites to surface and—more importantly—how your law firm can become one of them.

1 — How AI Models Choose Sources

AI models don’t think like Google. They don’t rank webpages the same way, they don’t use “SEO signals” in the traditional sense, and they don’t operate based on backlinks alone.

Instead, when ChatGPT or Perplexity cites or summarizes external websites, they rely on a combination of:

High-Authority, Crawlable Sources

AI leans heavily on sources that are:

  • Indexed by Bing, Google, or Perplexity
  • Easy to crawl (fast loading, clean HTML, no blocked pages)
  • Known for trust and accuracy

If your site isn’t crawlable—or worse, if AI crawlers are blocked—you’re invisible.

Structured Data (Schema Markup)

AI models love structure.
Schemas help systems interpret:

  • What your page is
  • Who wrote it
  • What services you offer
  • What locations you serve
  • Whether you’re a trustworthy legal authority

It’s essentially a “packaged context” for AI and search engines to understand your firm.

Mentions & Backlinks from Trusted Sources

AI systems reference networks of information, not isolated pages.

If your firm is mentioned across credible digital ecosystems—legal sites, news outlets, organizations, .gov websites—AI will naturally place more trust in your content.

Recency + Engagement Signals

AI and search engines systems prioritize content that is:

  • Updated recently
  • Resurfaced frequently
  • Engaged with by users
  • Viewed or referenced in multiple places

Fresh content = more visibility.

Citation Trust (E-E-A-T)

Legal and medical fields get special scrutiny.

AI prefers:

  • Author transparency
  • Expert credentials
  • Cited statutes, case law, and official sources
  • Content reviewed by professionals

This increases your “citation trust score,” even though AI companies never call it that.

Key Takeaway:

To show up as a source in AI-generated answers, your law firm website must be crawlable, referenced, structured, and trusted.

2 —  Boost Your Inclusion in AI + LLM Results

These are the most actionable, high-impact steps that law firms can implement immediately.

Use Legal-Specific Structured Data (Schema)

Schema markup is one of the strongest relevance signals for both search engines and AI models. Schema markups structure information in fields and clearly communicate your information to search and AI engines. Every law firm website should include:

LegalService Schema on all service pages

Include fields like:

  • Legalservice
  • AreaServed
  • Address
  • Attorney
  • Founder
  • practiceArea
  • FAQpage

Without schema, AI and search engines will still crawl your website and will do its best to organization your website pages and analyze the content.

Get Referenced by Authoritative Legal & News Sources

AI rely heavily on “cross-reference networks.” The more often credible sources mention you, the more likely AI will source your content into AI answers.

Aim for mentions or backlinks from sites like:

  • Justia
  • Avvo
  • Law.com
  • Legal Examiner
  • Reuters or AP News (via PR distribution)
  • Local Bar Associations
  • Local Chambers of Commerce

Other effective places to get referenced

  • Community or city websites
  • Press releases
  • Legal podcasts
  • Legal roundups or listicles (if legitimate)

When high-authority domains mention your firm, AI connects your website to trusted legal ecosystems. That increases your chances of being pulled as a source.

3 — Publish Unique, Reference-Worthy Legal Content

LLMs prefer definitive answers, not short, surface-level SEO content. If you want AI to cite your firm, publish content that’s worth reading. Typically done in guides or what we call in the industry, “evergreen content” where the information hold value for a long time.

Publish long-form resources like:

  • “California Nursing Home Abuse Laws: 2025 Guide (Updated Monthly)”
  • “Elder Neglect Reporting Requirements by County”
  • “California Wrongful Termination Laws Explained”

These are highly cite-able pages and it is exactly what your target audience wants to read. AI on the surface will look for comprehensive, authoritative and legally accurate content. If your guides become the best answer online, AI will adopt them into its knowledge base.

4 — Allow Crawlability (Very Important)

If AI tools can’t crawl your site, you may not appear as a source. In most content management systems (ex: WordPress or WebFlow), your website will be crawlable for AI models, however, we recommend your webmaster to check the site’s robots.txt tile.

Make sure:

  • sitemap.xml is updated
  • the site loads quickly
  • content isn’t behind scripts
  • pages use clean HTML

Add AI bots to your robots.txt:

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

User-agent: CCBot
Allow: /

This allows OpenAI (ChatGPT) and CommonCrawl (Perplexity) to crawl your content.

5 — Strengthen Your E-E-A-T

AI models may penalize anonymous content. We recommend all articles to have a published author.

Add:

  • Author names
  • Credentials (author page)
  • Bar numbers (author page)
  • “Reviewed By” labels
  • Citations to California statutes and cases

This increases:

  • SEO authority
  • AI trust signals
  • Visibility in knowledge graphs

6 — Track Whether Your Efforts Are Working

Try searching in Perplexity or ChatGPT:

See if your website is being indexed and cited. Go to your favorite AI Model and add the following prompt.

site:yourlawfirm.com

Check Bing Webmaster Tools

Since AI relies on Bing, this is essential. Bing offers Webmaster Tools to all users for free. If you have Search Console set up, you can quickly import the domain into Bing Webmaster Tools by logging into your Google workspace.

Monitor structured data errors

Keep monitoring Google Search Console for updates in AI results.

Final Thoughts

AI isn’t replacing SEO — it’s reshaping it. The firms that win in the next decade will be those who understand how AI:

  • discovers
  • evaluates
  • cites
  • and distributes information

Law firms that structure their websites for AI—not just Google—will rise to the top of AI results, answer boxes, sourcing lists, and conversational responses. The firms that ignore AI will disappear from the modern information ecosystem.

Your competitors are already asking these questions. Are you?
